It’s tempting to remain behind the safe “protected space” of the formal business relationship. You limit your conversations to the project, deadlines, and timelines. You become a slow-moving turtle that has armored itself against the potential of any genuine human interaction.

When someone lives 1,000 miles away, you won’t be able to “peer at their desk.” So, you have to take the initiative and ask meaningful open-ended questions. Create the environment where others feel comfortable sharing about their human side.
