Love Your Work

Written by: Bill Sherman on Tuesday, 11 July 2006, 3:32 PM

Do you love what you do? That’s a very important question–perhaps one of the most important questions in your life.

Some people go through their entire lives dreading the morning alarm clock. They mash the snooze button, hide under the covers, and pray for “five minutes more.” Then, they stumble through their morning routine with the reluctance of a child being taken to a dentist’s appointment. Each day at work, their spirits shrivel a little more. Eventually, they become hollow shell. They go through the motions, but they’ve mentally checked-out.

We spend so much of our lives at work. If you work an average 40 hour week, you spend 20% of your entire life (including the time you sleep) each year at work.

  • When you wake up in the morning, do you find yourself excited to work with your colleagues and clients?
  • Do the projects you touch challenge you to grow?
  • Do you feel your current role allows you to produce your best work?
  • When you go home, do you feel satisfied and energized (or do you feel drained)?

If you’re not loving your current role, what can you do to reach the point where you would love what you do?

Something to say?
